Should
We Help the Homeless People?
Nowadays, homeless people are everywhere in the
world. Some of them may lose their job
and cannot find another one so they lost their belief and chose to be homeless;
some of them are disabled people, who do not have the ability to go to work;
some of them are orphans, who have no family; some of them are frauds, who
pretend like homeless people and just want to earn some money by begging from
others. Although some of the homeless
people not really need help, ethically, we should help those disabled and
orphaned people who really need people’s help.
We should do some little things to help those people who
really need help. When I was in primary
school, I remember one time our school organized a donation activity to donate
our unnecessary clothes and school supplies to the children from the poor
area. I was very pleased to do that because I think I can do my best to
help the children like my age somewhere. I went home and collected all
the old stuff that I do not use anymore and wrapped it beautifully. At
that time, I feel like I was so respectful because when the child in the poor
area received my gifts, he/she must be so happy and excited. Although I
just did a little, what I did would affect another person's life and it would
make his/her life much better. However,
I also remember the last time I saw a homeless person when I was coming off the
freeway. He was holding a paper said "HUNGRY" on it. He
looked like around 40 years-old. I did not take any reaction because I
think he did have the ability to go to work to make a living rather than beg
from others. I think it is because of his sloth. If he is
hardworking, he can get a job for sure, at least, a job which can support him
to make a living. So, I do not want to help those people like him who is
not really need help.
So
what are the causes of homelessness? As we know, there are a lot of causes of
homelessness, such as domestic violence; high cost and shortage of housing; poverty,
joblessness, education, and literacy; effects of mental illness and chemical
addiction; lack of community supports; drug and alcohol related problems and so
on. I remember the last time I went to
Las Vegas during the winter break; I saw a lot of homeless people on the
platform bridge. Some of them were just
sitting at the side of the bridge and holding a piece of paper said “HUNGRY” or
“I need $ for food”, but some of them were singing and playing guitar in order
to get money from people. Nevertheless,
the one that most impressed me was a man sitting on the bridge and holding a
paper said “Need money for alcohol”. I
was very surprised that a homeless person could beg to people for money in
order to buy alcohol. I did not do anything
because I think it was not worth it to give money to those alcohol addicted
people.
In
my opinion, the most important thing we should do is to set up some communities
to support the homeless people. Many
people experience difficulties in their life. For the most part, families, churches,
neighborhoods and schools operate as webs of support that sustain them until
the problem is overcome. For some, however, those supports are no longer
available because they have fled their community to escape domestic violence,
have been rejected by their parents over lifestyle differences, and because
they have "burned through" their support systems due to multiple
difficulties or for many other reasons. For those without support, a single
crisis such as a sick child with no daycare or the breakdown of a car can lead
to loss of employment, financial crisis and homelessness, and without that
community support, the path back out of homelessness is vastly more difficult (“Causes
of Homelessness”). So it is very important
to organize some communities to end homelessness. What is more, the government should provide
more employment to those homeless people, so that they can get a job to make a
living rather than stay on the street and beg to people.
However,
for those people who do not want to help the homeless people because they may
think that some of them are swindles and they do not want to waste their
money. There are a lot of homeless
people who are not really homeless, they just act like a homeless to earn
money. It is another job for them. But for those homeless people who lost their
disability or who are really old and have no family, we should do something to
help them. We can give them some
exchange so that they can buy something to eat at this moment, or we can bring
them some food from home. We are living
in a very comfortable environment. We
have wonderful families, we can go shopping and buy nice clothes, and we can
eat in a very tasty restaurant. Some of
us may even have fancy cars, big houses, and luxury goods. John Bunyan, an English
Christian writer and preacher who is famous for writing The Pilgrim's Progress said, “You have not lived
until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” So we should save a
little bit money for those people who are homeless, who even do not know if
he/she will have money for the next meal.
We can help them a lot if we want.
Maybe it is just a dollar, but this dollar can make him/her eat
satisfied. For us, it is just a little,
but for them, it is really a lot.
As
a conclusion, we should make our contribution to help those homeless people who
really cannot make their living. We can
give them food and money directly; we can find a shelter for them; or we can
tell the organizations and communities to help them. There are many ways to help them if we are
willing to do something for them. As
what I mentioned above, it is necessary to help those homeless people who are
disabled and too old to go to work. No
matter how much it is, at least, it will help them some way assuredly.
