Journal free-write

One one hand Jeannette Walls describes the squalor she and her family lived in: hunger, poverty, garbage, lack of basic necessities. On the other, she describes the rich intellectual world her parents imparted: discussions of geology, math, literature, art. In light of the fact that three out of the four Walls children became successful, productive members of society, what do you think is more important to children's development: comfortable living conditions or an enriching intellectual environment?

To children's development, I think an enriching intellectual environment is more important than comfortable living conditions. Though a comfortable living environment is very important to a child, it creates more oppotunities for child to live better, an enriching intellectual environment is the most essential issue to a child. First of all, if children grow up in a very hard living situation, they will cherrish everything they have and will not waste things. They know how difficult to earn money and even to live in the world.  On the contrast, if children live and grow up in a very superior living environment, they cannot understand how tough the poor's life are. And also they may be lazy and unhardworking.
